That or they just think that way.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Does art always reflect something of the creator? I wonder. Much that is personal to me may go towards what I make, somehow...subtly. My 'chaotic' approach could reflect the 'blow-with-the-wind' way I've always lived, which is not to say I'm some kind of spontaneous free spirit but something of a drifter...unfocused, except on art which, ironically, more often than not is usually...ragged? I focus hard on being imprecise.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">They way I'm using colour carbon paper is the way I always work, spontaneously improvising. I like how carbon creates (in my case) unintended marks from, say, the roll of the carriage, moving the paper, a finger nail etc. Other marks are sometimes intentional. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">That's all for now, folks. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><p></p>el hombre invisiblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04472291492193770508noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4144615019824453008.post-62140821011885189382024-03-22T10:15:00.000-07:002024-03-22T10:15:40.420-07:00For Sale: Vispo: Seen And Heard<p> </p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiwDaVgGLsDhLhWlrUrtEJ3QBWfHpUUgtavj8cMRvtdevDJr8m_w2fsj6iATbbhqVEcY3hXrBcd3ooS1xJu0By5cVpvNb_xx_tIR0OsXqc_4liicp8f9JQNYGYXS_zNJ3hQN7V8GdKHyz09MgN7SSSwqS0m9zPZaDVWmmcpSxoegnY7RgEwtT8e837_ALhO" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="" data-original-height="3501" data-original-width="2457" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiwDaVgGLsDhLhWlrUrtEJ3QBWfHpUUgtavj8cMRvtdevDJr8m_w2fsj6iATbbhqVEcY3hXrBcd3ooS1xJu0By5cVpvNb_xx_tIR0OsXqc_4liicp8f9JQNYGYXS_zNJ3hQN7V8GdKHyz09MgN7SSSwqS0m9zPZaDVWmmcpSxoegnY7RgEwtT8e837_ALhO=w448-h640" width="448" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">RTomens, 2024</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><p></p><p>A piece I made this morning - fresh off the Olympia typewriter!</p><p>On 80 g/m ivory paper.</p><p>Size: A4</p><p>Prices: Europe £105 - Worldwide £115 (postage included)</p><p><br /></p>

Thus ending a tradition going back hundreds of years? </p><p style="text-align: justify;">Never mind that, what about the boiler?</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Ours has been playing up for weeks but only got attended to this morning. A new part is needed. That's the domestic update, just to remind you that I don't spend a leisurely life of some privileged artist, you know, just making art all day, oh no; I vacuum the floor...I wash up...I cook...I'm a thoroughly modern man!</p><p style="text-align: justify;">And I know what a woman is...(how controversial!!!).</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Meanwhile, here's some music. I've had it burned to disc for years but only played it again this morning, then it occurred to me to see if it was available online and lo and behold, it was. Released, unbelievably, in 1989, this is the most authentic-sounding imaginary sci-fi soundtrack (circa 1958) I've ever heard. From the Bandcamp page: </p><p style="text-align: justify;">'Taking as a reference the book "Die Roboter sind unter uns" by Rolf Strehl, published in the late 1950s, Miguel A.Ruiz and Héctor Hernández, two electronic composers from Madrid, conceived the hypothetical soundtrack for a film dedicated to the advent of the "mechanical brains." In the summer of 1989 and after exhaustive multi-channel recording sessions, mixing was done at the Toracic Studios in Madrid.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Some of the machines used included, among others, the legendary British VCS3 synthesizer, the AEG modular system, the monstrous Korg PS3200 polyphonic synthesizer, compact synthesizers of the Korg MS series, analog sequencer, ring modulator, delay lines and archaic boxes of rhythm. The cassette of the same name was published at the end of that same year by the now defunct company IEP, directed by Luis Mesa, one of the most active Spanish audio creators in the 80s. At the beginning of 2003 the old tape reels were reviewed and remastered for this edition in digital format by Miguel A.Ruiz.'</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Collecting old synths and setting out to sound like the BBC Radiophonic Workshop is nothing new, but Héctor Hernández & Miguel A.Ruiz created a masterpiece of the 'genre' with this 'soundtrack'. They exploit their armoury brilliantly. Mechanical brains taking control!</p>

If anyone tries to create a face, I won't be able to help - ha-ha! <p></p><p style="text-align: justify;">Tickets <a href="https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/o/somers-town-history-space-8944554646" target="_blank"><span style="color: #b45f06;">here</span></a>.</p>el hombre invisiblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04472291492193770508noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4144615019824453008.post-82761034344717702222024-03-13T11:10:00.000-07:002024-03-13T11:10:21.982-07:00Vispo: No Joke<p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhtG6cxJ-_t51-Qo-UN1P9FqIFHmXM9-luc7LJLpwiv-dfxP7Tubeaxs8ed28v01qlJF689K0_6Kz0MHcPTYN43SPRjuI688cooP2V6Oz7HAD2eg_oOiDOwIUR6d9W7ppVTA1o0sswhrpav-5DLchEZNayt4Qli00_KVaLUg6dy4urzbx7KSwnlWQQINTZz" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="" data-original-height="2484" data-original-width="1710" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhtG6cxJ-_t51-Qo-UN1P9FqIFHmXM9-luc7LJLpwiv-dfxP7Tubeaxs8ed28v01qlJF689K0_6Kz0MHcPTYN43SPRjuI688cooP2V6Oz7HAD2eg_oOiDOwIUR6d9W7ppVTA1o0sswhrpav-5DLchEZNayt4Qli00_KVaLUg6dy4urzbx7KSwnlWQQINTZz=w440-h640" width="440" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">RTomens, 2024</td></tr></tbody></table><br /></p><div style="text-align: justify;">New type of paper. "tropa," which involves the formation of large ensembles of instrumentalists and sound amplification; and "wakiña," meaning community strength. According to Prudencio, the acoustic and expressive identity of Andean-highland sounds originates from these principles, as does that of the OEIN.'</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I had to quote because, to be honest, I'm lost for words, especially when fathoming what the hell I'm listening to and I've only started listening this morning, whilst it undoubtedly requires many more plays to even begin to comprehend the depths and, yes, what you're actually listening to. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Whilst I think of the Art Ensemble of Chicago's slogan 'Ancient To The Future' that doesn't cover this anthology, really. Makes Aphex Twin sound like the hippy muso he secretly was - heh-heh. On that note, you can even detect something of AT in tracks like Flummox, but throughout it all <i>everything </i>is here, every familiar skittering percussive D&B break, bass, Acid Techno squiggle rearranged, recycled to make you dance in your head. Top marks.</p>

The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” </span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: medium;">- Picasso</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;">Successful professional artists do seem to have grown up and remained artists. They made time for art. They went through tough periods of having no money, possibly even whilst also having a family, which might be deemed irresponsible at the time and only the right decision in retrospect.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Grow up! I've tried. I only succeed in the context of either hearing or seeing a friend do/say something stupid which evokes the 'Grow up!' response, but really, I've no right. I created my own privileged position of having time to make Art. Or...life just turned out that way. No kids, mortgage, car, career...no excuse really for not retaining that child-like joy in making Art.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">We're probably all kids inside, even in old age. There's a part of us that is still...5...10...or 15. I think it's necessary in order to survive. Childhood remains visible to the inner eye...a sight assuring continuity...a place we might still feel we can be a part of...almost touch. It's better than only looking ahead into an uncertain future and old age.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">I'm a child with adult eyes when I make Art. All that living and seeing what's happened in the world can't help but somehow influence the process, yet I'm not overtly a 'political' artist. I saw a quote recently which said all art must either be political, or mere decoration. Rubbish. There's plenty or room between the two.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Yes, when I make Art part of me is that child, gleefully just doing it for fun...trashing paper, splashing paint (and glue), typing away...not knowing what 'the rules' are or even believing in them. An unusual move for me but I was in a crazy mood, you know, thinking 'What can I do that's different?' Work in square dimensions, that's what. The text is from <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_Liberty" target="_blank"><span style="color: #b45f06;">On Liberty</span></a> by John Stuart Mill.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div><div style="text-align: justify;">Hank Mobley said there was <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Room_for_Squares" target="_blank"><span style="color: #b45f06;">No Room For Squares</span></a> and in the sense he meant I would usually agree, unless I'm feeling particularly forgiving towards...Taylor Swift fans? An easy target! </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">No-one calls anyone 'square' these days, of course. I wonder when it drifted out of usage...the mid-70s? Late-60s? Whatever, it's a real shame...I mean, 'square' was the simplest put-down you could fire at someone who didn't 'get it'. Get what? Anything? Perhaps it wasn't about what they didn't get but what they did, as in did with their hair, clothing, buying power (square books, square music, square art).</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div><div style="text-align: justify;">We probably revived 'square' in the early 80s during the Jazz Revival because we thought we were the opposite, namely; 'hip'. Being hip entailed listening to Jazz, of course, wearing 'beat' clothes and appreciating John Cassavetes' <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadows_(1959_film)" target="_blank"><span style="color: #b45f06;">Shadows</span></a> and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pull_My_Daisy" target="_blank"><span style="color: #b45f06;">Pull My Daisy</span></a> and all the other hip films along with the 'right' Art.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Todays it seems there's no 'right' or 'wrong', no 'hip' or 'square'. Perhaps it's hip to be square. If so, blame the post-modernists. It's all their fault with their non-hierarchical jive...their submission to total subjectivity, rejection of societal order (except, perhaps, a post-Marxist one - pah!). So a million university courses on TV soap operas was born...and now there are <a href="https://www.nme.com/news/music/taylor-swift-is-the-subject-of-a-new-university-course-3483630" target="_blank"><span style="color: #b45f06;">courses on Taylor Swift</span></a>. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Are there any courses on visual poetry? I could look it up but can't be bothered. Art is taught, why not Vispo? Perhaps maintaining the amount of typewriters needed for a class wouldn't be viable (<i>you</i> try finding a typewriter engineer). That would be practice, of course, but I suppose it could be Theory. Visual Poetry and its Meaning in the Age of the Smartphone. Kenneth Goldsmith probably already teaches that.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Over and out for now, hipsters. Looking at my current situation (unemployed) negatively, I could say I'm there now. But then, does that mean that being employed is the only positive place to be; a 'real', solid, acceptable, viable 'place' in society? Since we tend to gauge our place in society so simplistically it's tempting to say I'm in Nomansland. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">Wait though, I refuse to be put there! Whilst it's fair to say that not being employed mostly does a person no good, should anyone find themselves in that state and somehow survive in good mental (if not financial) health, then surely that's a good thing. Work for most people is that time-consuming chore that's necessary to survive, materially. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">I have a dull work record, from one dead-end job to another, broken by spells of unemployment. Deciding it was the latter, he took a quid off. Imagine (can you?) how thrilled I was to open this very plain, anonymous-looking book to find it filled with fantastic full-bleed colour (Agfacolor) images. It was produced to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the pharmaceutical and biotechnology company, Bayer, who, funnily enough, trademarked and marketed Heroin from 1898 to 1910. It's funny because the title of the opening essay is: 'Liberation Through Chemical Research'. Already? Yes. GRM have just released<i> La nef des fous</i> (The Ship of Fools), comprising of pieces composed by Robert Cahen in the GRM studios between 1971 and 1974. He's now known as a filmmaker but his mastery of sound is evident on this album, as it is in his films. Beautiful, terrifying, ominous sounds blended brilliantly across five tracks in which any calm, Zen-like atmosphere is interrupted by transmissions from aliens whose messages, when decoded, promise the total takeover and rewiring of your neural pathways. You will be lost in 'music' and thankful that GRM have found this treasure for us to savour.</div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhmT2807oy3C4zTI7GFtL311z4ERjmkHWlCLceEpzvefWxl5yFk3CsuwjZMwU0uZgQjyKf7_9xZ2C7vucc1PRJrgX9zAD-7MLCvJ94Z2iGedZX8wu89ObeFZK3gLNJHJcvGdDqbdTAYbwtW7fB7jJCSMWjSNvNjcX7oMutBAYQy5W0mbHCT2g9Vrk5rKJHY" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="682" data-original-width="1024" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhmT2807oy3C4zTI7GFtL311z4ERjmkHWlCLceEpzvefWxl5yFk3CsuwjZMwU0uZgQjyKf7_9xZ2C7vucc1PRJrgX9zAD-7MLCvJ94Z2iGedZX8wu89ObeFZK3gLNJHJcvGdDqbdTAYbwtW7fB7jJCSMWjSNvNjcX7oMutBAYQy5W0mbHCT2g9Vrk5rKJHY" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ZWY2LXaxu2g" width="320" youtube-src-id="ZWY2LXaxu2g"></iframe></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">*</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">Here's a piece I made recently.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjXF3TwsIaN6_1GHuJX2QXnd_Ijvh_Wk9oeOgXtjzb8LBWMuxWMLI9FOCop9cKBO89h17KMhrwAqxGdwV-hJLVGs6pnPGzVkBE_kQidlYXPQK8jxFOM2QCLlMv3-PX8XVsCCNaCKCKfeIjXuc2Cfz_oXlTBEzmIu57NSXwphEa-_Ax-xHB-KnG5-iVo-DsJ" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="" data-original-height="3507" data-original-width="2429" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjXF3TwsIaN6_1GHuJX2QXnd_Ijvh_Wk9oeOgXtjzb8LBWMuxWMLI9FOCop9cKBO89h17KMhrwAqxGdwV-hJLVGs6pnPGzVkBE_kQidlYXPQK8jxFOM2QCLlMv3-PX8XVsCCNaCKCKfeIjXuc2Cfz_oXlTBEzmIu57NSXwphEa-_Ax-xHB-KnG5-iVo-DsJ=w443-h640" width="443" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">RTomens, 2024</td></tr></tbody></table><br /></div><p></p>el hombre invisiblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04472291492193770508noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4144615019824453008.post-51635211403243271642024-01-13T03:47:00.000-08:002024-01-13T03:47:10.760-08:00Book: Collage, Assemblage and the Found Object - Diane Waldman - Joseph Cornell as an Abstract Expressionist?<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiI5kNYuCvKV1rt40wmEj4TQh83UxwMMJkRpz3qhn_xpA0Xpve-_0o0iuhMFRxyDCn_qr5qPJKuWHx-LXlPyItBzfJin3KpitVo5q8PEjUDJPGlifv97-jOGUjDx2l137omkbYOqWZBhvp7vWOwj4oM5I-Pu9-Em9n9jssprUrrG_ASmfocU9QqCcbvibky" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1153" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiI5kNYuCvKV1rt40wmEj4TQh83UxwMMJkRpz3qhn_xpA0Xpve-_0o0iuhMFRxyDCn_qr5qPJKuWHx-LXlPyItBzfJin3KpitVo5q8PEjUDJPGlifv97-jOGUjDx2l137omkbYOqWZBhvp7vWOwj4oM5I-Pu9-Em9n9jssprUrrG_ASmfocU9QqCcbvibky=w225-h400" width="225" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">First art book purchase of 2024, found at a reasonable price on the Oxfam website (cheaper than anywhere else). Perhaps you agree with Waldman that he belongs in that category. She claims his works from the 1950s 'parallel the interests of the Abstract Expressionist painters' due to the 'painterly interiors' and 'paint...often layered, some of it intentionally chipped or left peeling'. OK, but I think it's stretching things a bit to place him in a chapter called Abstract Expressionism. He belongs more in the Surrealism chapter, surely. His work was not 'abstract', not did it demonstrate expressionistic tendencies. This fault aside, it's a good book.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEipPb5FXqqga2wRs9MRkIwawl0gYpDD9XK2Hx35LwMVqr20Y5Ykgpj3ff1ENDje_nNwg-EVj9_O83usuiOg4_Fu_s_PbhQeQjO5gblKoqB_g9YE7UI9D9UJYyJxpbXSCVqG4qAx6hpIGdX7pUUYWYEVXr6-gdBgYetYSDaalAE8o1uTZxaHTwJTP9jYfZo9" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="470" data-original-width="374" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEipPb5FXqqga2wRs9MRkIwawl0gYpDD9XK2Hx35LwMVqr20Y5Ykgpj3ff1ENDje_nNwg-EVj9_O83usuiOg4_Fu_s_PbhQeQjO5gblKoqB_g9YE7UI9D9UJYyJxpbXSCVqG4qAx6hpIGdX7pUUYWYEVXr6-gdBgYetYSDaalAE8o1uTZxaHTwJTP9jYfZo9=w318-h400" width="318" /></a></div><br /></div><p></p>el hombre invisiblehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04472291492193770508noreply@blogger.com0
