.......do you remember art hierarchy?
yes?
It served a purpose for about 300 years........
........the purpose being to:
emphasise the god-like status of artists
boost the egos of kings & queens
remind common people that they were common
allow critics to display their knowledge
& other things.............
but now it's dead
isn't it?
Except for some non-creative worshippers of the old order & stuffy critics & even some backward artists...
(backward? yes)
Empowered by the fact that today anyone can Do & Display on the internet more common people are encouraged to make art than ever before
(before the internet)
they have forums on which to discuss, display & be encouraged & gently, constructively criticised...........to even be made to feel like stars for as long as their thread remains active (more than 15 minutes!).........................................................................................
Democracy erodes hierarchy, except in Politics..........but.........OK, more artists may increase the number of worshippers at the alter of High Art, it may................but..........it also should/could/must encourage self-empowerment which, in turn, makes them less in awe of The Legends............................
it should because to be strong,
to be creative,
to carry on
one needs belief
& the idolisation of those Art gods can & frequently does weaken the resolve of the common creator, the fragile creators, who must gain faith in themselves.....& the best way to do this is to resist the kind of veneration which can bring on the dreaded inferiority complex....................
....................enter the Hierarchy Zone &
you will never be as good as
The Gods!
but you are better..........
because you are you..........
& what you make is yours............
Picasso didn't do it
