Collage: Finishing School / Ridley Scott's Alien (and smoking)

I made this last week.

No, it's not a comment on contemporary politics/war or women and refrigerators.

I would prefer it, though, if all women standing next to refrigerators looked like this; like they're about to set off for work as spaceship stewardesses. That or they just like looking glamourous in 'space helmets'.

I love the simplicity of a perspex (?) sphere representing outer space. As design, it tells us all we need to know in an instant, unless you're too young and ignorant to recognise the symbolism of the Space Age. In which case, you're wondering why they have goldfish bowls on their heads. That said, even goldfish bowls are a thing of the past, so perhaps that's not what you'd think.

Talking of outer space, I rewatched Ridley Scott's Alien the other day. Is there a better sci-fi film? It has to be in your Top Three, doesn't it? Mine would also include Blade Runner and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Obviously. Once again I chuckled to myself whilst some of Nostromo's crew sucked greedily on cigarettes upon being woken up. Or perhaps it was only John Hurt doing that. I find it funny to think that a predicted future space ship crew would be allowed (or even inclined) to smoke. Yet it's right for the time (1979), when smoking wasn't banished as extensively as it is today.

Mind you, astronauts then wouldn't have been puffing away in their capsules, so I wonder if Scott was adhering to a puritan Hollywood code which signalled the evils of smoking, or rather the nasty consequences. It's bad for you, kids. You end up with your guts ripped open by an alien creature.
