Henry Clews Sculptures

The Château de La Napoule was five minutes from where we stayed in the South of France last week so a visit was inevitable but what we couldn't have imagined is the weirdness of  Henry Clews' sculptures. The chateau was restored by Henry and Marie Clews as an ongoing work since 1918 and in the grand tradition of bohemian eccentricity hosted many parties along with 'outsider' art activity indulgence. Both were connected to wealthy families and could therefore, presumably, afford to live in such grand style. We were guided around some rooms but the one pictured above, his studio, offered the strangest delights. Freud would have had a field day with work like this...

...many biomorphic alien creatures...

...do you think this might be considered phallic?

...the film, Alien, kept springing to mind...
