Doodling during a few idle moments, since when else would you doodle? Unless you make a studied habit of it and I'm sure some people do. So the blank screen was gradually filled, first with totally random lines then gradually the idea of a 'face' came to me because, you know, the lure of representation is so hard to resist. Although what kind of face this represents is anyone's guess. It's crude. It's OK to be crude, right? Perhaps crude art will be big n 2020? The kind of art made by untutored people...outsider art, if you like. But as a friend said to me last year, I'm too 'knowing', apparently, to make Outsider Art. I don't know what I'm supposed to 'know' really. Just some art history (20th century) is all.
Is the art of Mark E Smith crude? Some would say so...rough around the edges....but oh so knowing. As from this afternoon I know that the new Jan St Werner album on Editions Mego will feature Mark E Smith. Some early good news for 2020. Read more about it here.
