To my surprise somebody else explored virtually the same techniques and styles and media (or whatever you wish to call it) as me - the nerve! I thought I was the only one. I joke, of course. Having bought Revanches by Steve McCaffrey a few weeks ago, though, I was surprised to see examples of drawing, typewriter art/Vispo/Concrete Poetry. More amazed that he too was interested in post-geometric (?) line drawing. The examples in the book were done in 1970.
It's rare to find anyone else happily exploring various styles. Even Vispo artists usually stick to one style once they've found it. I understand why. It's....easier? More to the point, perhaps, it gives them an identity. Ditto all artists. Me, I have to vary what I do. I could no more just type for the rest of my life than I could only draw or make collages.
Steve's been at it much longer than me. I've corresponded with him since buying the book and discovered a few of the typewriters he used (he volunteered the info). Models such as the legendary IBM Selectric. Perhaps it was used to create stunners like these.
I recently took the plunge and bought a new typewriter...
The font's smaller than that of the Remington and took some getting used to but the action is so much easier/quicker, being about 30 years younger. I was quicker 30 years ago too. I've created a few pieces with it since returning from the holiday. This one is made from original type which was then expanded through electronic trickery....
There are still a few copies of my book,
Yes I No, available. Perhaps it was the last time the old Remington will be used consistently, but I don't have the heart to get rid of it.
