Collage: The Right Stripe / A pure chance operation

RTomens, 2020

What are the chances? Without using the I Ching as a way to filter out intention, as John Cage did, this collage came about through other means. It was purely unintentional, strictly unintentional, as in happening without me wanting anything to happen.

I had been cutting out images with a view to using them. They got sandwiched, as they often do, between various pieces of paper beside the printer...blank sheets, blank card, books covers, the reverse of which I use as backgrounds, etc. Uncovering stuff just to see what was there, I found a man in a pinstripe suit had been folded and was lying on top of a zebra. Not just lying there, but in a position which caused the image to sit perfectly into the one of the zebra. Luckily, I had removed the man's head. Chance even gave the zebra an eye in the form the the handkerchief in the man's pocket. So The Right Stripe was born.
