Paper collage: Redemption / Consumer culture

RTomens, 2021

Wassup? Been shopping recently? I mean, into a shop (other than the supermarket)? Me neither. I'm looking forward to charity shops reopening so I can get amongst the books again. The collage above isn't a specific comment on shopping and consumerism, the text torn from an old newspaper just had to go with an image of a 'Redemption Store'.

Recently a friend on FB made a comment about 'zombie consumers' to accompany a photo of shopping trollies abandon in the sludge of a river. I warned him he was in danger of sounding like a 'communist', not knowing exactly what he meant, or even what I meant by the response. But I was reminded of the slogan: 'you'll own nothing and be happy'. Right. If you don't own anything, who does? Someone else. And they will control you through their ownership.

Signs here and there suggest a vogue for anti-materialist/post-Marxist, neo-socialist ideas. You know the kind. These things come and go in waves. Aside from millions of minds having gone mad over the last year or so, naturally, youth will be what they think is idealistic. Yeah, I would have shouted similar slogans 40 years ago. Maybe.

Like those declaring the Covid-restricted world to be a better place, ecologically/socially. OK. Enjoy it whilst you can! I'll take the busy, normal world, thanks.

I've never been a big consumer, except when it comes to books. When the shops open, I'm sure, as I kneel before the alter (shelves), I shall be redeemed!
