Watched No Country For Old Men again the other night and it still strikes me as a modern masterpiece - script, direction, acting and Roger Deakins' stunning cinematography - the total package. Well, I was in a charity shop recently and Cormac McCarthy's book caught my eye, opened it randomly, alighted on the page where Carson Wells is interviewed for the job and was surprised to see that the film script stuck to the text, exactly. Trouble is, as much as I want to read the novel again I know I'd never be able to stop picturing the characters as the Coen Brothers created them. Just reading that section conjured up the sight of Woody Harrelson, stetson and all. Luckily I did read it before the film was made. It kept me up nights, such is the crackling brilliance of the prose. So now I have to weigh up losing precious sleep (I rise early for Work) or forgoing the pleasure of the book. Tough choice.
