Richard Prince, eat your heart out. In 1971, when Prince was just 20 and no doubt wondering how the hell he could become famous, Rolf Harris was taking cowboy art to the masses via Wonderloaf. This ad is from the Daily Mirror, dated July 11, 1970. I like to think Prince saw it whilst visiting England and was inspired. Surely it would be a great idea if he allowed prints to be given away with tokens from a bread-making company! This also 'evokes all the drama, excitement and romance of the West', doesn't it?
This is unbelievable. As a 9 year old kid I cut out the tokens printed on the Wonderloaf wrappers and sent off for my print, which I duly received a couple of weeks later.
ReplyDeleteRemembering receiving the picture I was convinced the cowboy was riding across a corn field, it was 52 years ago.
