Film: A Special Day (Ettore Scola, 1977)

Antonietta Taberi (Sophia Loren) is stuck at home whilst her family join the crowds in Rome to celebrate the visit of Hitler. Loren looks exhausted in this film, as befits the housewife of six boys and a brutish husband. Her myna bird escapes, which leads to her meeting Gabriele (Marcello Mastroianni). To say much more would ruin your enjoyment but the relationship is beautifully developed and played out to a non-stop soundtrack of militaristic music for the fascist parade. My only quibble is that the version we watched was overdubbed, which at first made it sound more like a spaghetti Western but once used to that the film is a melancholy treat, both actors on top form. Highly recommended.
